Blessings and Limitations of the Church

I believe we can be members of the Lord’s earthly church and still not be living up to what the Lord would have us be inasmuch and we fail to receive and live by the higher law. This observation has nothing to do with the apostles who guide us;  it just means we as a people are not willing to receive any more. This is probably due to idolatry, unbelief, pride, distractions, love of mammon, being attached to Babylon etc. Joseph himself battled with the members of his day including his closest of associates and the quorum of the 12 apostles when he stated:

“I have tried for a number of years to get the minds of the Saints prepared to receive the things of God; but we frequently see some of them, after suffering all they have for the work of God, will fly to pieces like glass as soon as anything comes that is contrary to their traditions: they cannot stand the fire at all. How many will be able to abide a celestial law, and go through and receive their exaltation, I am unable to say, as many are called, but few are chosen.”  (History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 6:185.)

This is akin to when Moses wanted to bring up the elders of Israel to see the Lord and they would not; or when he was to bring them the Melchizedek priesthood and higher laws and they like dogs returned to their vomit and worshipped the golden calf instead. Moses then acting as a proxy savior stepped in and asked the Lord to spare the people from being wiped off the earth. They continued to be guided by a true prophet albeit living lesser laws because of rejection of the higher. Only a remnant of the original outcasts of Israel were able to see the promised land. There is a type and shadow of this in the Latter-day Saint restoration.

For what doth it profit a man if a gift is bestowed upon him, and he receive not the gift? Behold, he rejoices not in that which is given unto him, neither rejoices in him who is the giver of the gift. (D&C 88:33)

Yes absolutely we are living in a glorious dispensation with great blessings attendant with it if we will receive them. We however are not currently enjoying all the fruits of the dispensation of the fullness of times.  We are still under condemnation (see D&C 84:54-58 ) as far as I can tell for treating lightly the Book or Mormon and the covenant that is contained therein. (Please correct me if anyone has seen or heard of a prophet, apostle or inspired person teach that this condemnation has been lifted yet.)  I gather from the admonitions and sober warnings of Nephi and Moroni in the Book of Mormon that the Gentiles they speak of are us in the Americas within the church. Those who don’t reject the fullness of the gospel and the fullness of Gods laws may qualify to be a part of the great and marvelous work in gathering the outcasts of Israel once again and will carry them in their arms and upon their shoulders with songs of everlasting joy will they sing together; and how beautiful upon the mountains shall those gentiles be for they will see eye to eye when the Lord redeems His people!
