The Parable of the Container Ship

There once was a container ship built mighty and strong that was set sail many years ago to deliver her precious cargo to the inhabitants of the world. The original cargo included that which was of most worth to the people. After many years the operators of the ship began to add items of their own making to the cargo of the ship seeing as there was room enough and they could increase their profits. Year after year, voyage after voyage more cargo was added to the ship until one day it became too much. Although the ship was built correctly and could withstand the rigors of sailing with the original load, the added weight proved too heavy and the ship could no longer remain upright. Before she sank some rescue tugs came and helped off-load some of the added cargo which was promptly cast into the sea. Upon seeing this the operators of the ship were very angry because in their minds the ship could never sink, however those who were present knew that this brave act was the only way to keep the ship from being lost completely.

39 Verily, verily, I say unto you, that this is my doctrine, and whoso buildeth upon this buildeth upon my rock, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against them.
40 And whoso shall declare more or less than this, and establish it for my doctrine, the same cometh of evil, and is not built upon my rock; but he buildeth upon a sandy foundation, and the gates of hell stand open to receive such when the floods come and the winds beat upon them. (3 Nephi 11:39-49)

67 Behold, this is my doctrine–whosoever repenteth and cometh unto me, the same is my church.
68 Whosoever declareth more or less than this, the same is not of me, but is against me; therefore he is not of my church.
69 And now, behold, whosoever is of my church, and endureth of my church to the end, him will I establish upon my rock, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against them.(Doctrine & Covenants 10:67-69)
